NIT Patna Overview
The National Institute of Technology Patna (NIT Patna or NITP), formerly Bihar School of Engineering and Bihar College of Engineering, is a public engineering institution located in Patna in the Indian state of Bihar.
The institute was renamed as NIT Patna by the Government of India on January 28, 2004. NIT Patna marked its humble beginnings in 1886 with the establishment of a leader survey training school, which was subsequently promoted to Bihar College of Engineering Patna in the year 1924.
It is an autonomous institute functioning directly under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna is the 18th National Institute of Technology established in 2004 by the Department of H.R.D., Government of India after rechristening the former Bihar College of Engineering Patna.
With the establishment of the plaintiffs’ survey training school, which was subsequently promoted by Bihar College of Engineering Patna in 1924, NIT Patna marked its humble start in 1886.
This made the National Institute of Technology, Patna, India’s 6th oldest engineering institute. Later, in 1978, the graduate-level program was elevated to the postgraduate level.
The National Institute of Technology, Patna is located behind Gandhi Ghat, one of Patna’s most famous and revered locations, on the south bank of the holy river Ganges.
The National Institute of Technology, Patna has been declared an Institute of National Significance and a fully autonomous status has been granted by the Government of India through MHRD.
The institute has been ranked 63rd in the NIRF 2021 rankings under the engineering category. The National Institute of Technology, Patna, has also been declared a Center of Excellence for the provision of high-level education, scientific, engineering, and humanities instruction, research, and development. Architecture, civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, electronics technology, communication engineering, information Technology and mechanical engineering, as well as well-established physics, mathematics, and humanities and social sciences departments, are currently available at the National Institute of Technology, Patna.
On the whole, the institute spans around 40 acres of land space as it holds about 766 undergraduates within the institution as well as admits 316 postgraduates for the academic year 2022.
NIT Patna has failed to offer dual degree, PG integrated courses as well as PG 3-year and 6-year course programs for its students.
