IIEST Shibpur Overview
The Council of Education, Bengal decided to start civil engineering classes and a professorship in civil engineering at Hindu College in 1843 due to the necessity of meeting the required trained engineering personnel for the Public Work Departments before The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST Shibpur) was conceptualized. However, in 1856, it was first started as Civil Engineering College on the premises of Writers Building, Calcutta. With the establishment of Calcutta University in 1857, this college was affiliated with this university in the same year. The first-degree exam in the undergraduate civil engineering program was held in 1864. During 1865 and 1869, it was merged with Presidency College and functioned as a civil engineering department of it. In 1880, this college shifted to the current place Shibpur on the premises of Bishop’s College, Howrah, and was called the Government College Howrah imparting training to Civil and Mechanical Engineering. The college was then changed to Bengal Engineering College and became fully residential from 1889 onwards. During 1921-43, the name of the college space was changed to Bengal Engineering College, and started various departments of the college and reorganized on the recommendations of the Mukherjee Committee, and various UG programs and PG programs have been started since then. In 1949, a new building was constructed and all its departments were moved into it. In 1954, postgraduate courses in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Metallurgical were started. During 1954-55, an agreement of a Technical Cooperation Program of USA was signed between this college and the University of Wisconsin to help to develop laboratories, postgraduate programs, and research studies through which exchange of six guest professors from the University of Wisconsin to this college and five teachers from this college to the University of Wisconsin as research associates initiated. In 1981, its 125th anniversary was celebrated with the inauguration of then President of India Dr. N. Sanjeeva Reddy. It was under the World bank EIDP projects to upgrade its teaching and laboratories in Electronics and Computer Science. In 1992, it was elevated to a deemed university and became a full-fledged university in 2004. In 2014, the Government of India took over this institution and converted it into the Institute of National Importance, and renamed it IIEST Shibpur.
