IIT Bombay Overview
The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), a globally renowned premier government institution, was founded in 1958 as an independent public technical and research university in Powai, East Mumbai, situated on a spacious 200 hectares of land in a serene sylvan atmosphere. However, the establishment of four higher institutes of technology on par with their counterparts in the US and Europe was recommended by a businessman, educationist, industrialist, and public figure, Nalini Ranjan Sarkar, head of the high-powered committee of the Government of India, in 1946. In 1961, it was awarded as an institute of national importance. Furthermore, it again got help from the USSR through UNESCO, with an agreement between the Government of India and the USSR in 1965.
